The article investigates the birth of autonomous subject from the point of view of the role played by the concept of autonomy in the European discourse of citizenship. After an historical survey of recent literature on the issue, with special regard to the contribution made by Foucault the point is made that between the two poles of the autonomous individual as subject-of-rights and the absolute heteronomy of the «population» as the target of governmentality we have the space for the development of a set of social and political practices, through which the «others» of citizenship claim and affirm their own autonomy.

Abstract
The article investigates the birth of autonomous subject from the point of view of the role played by the concept of autonomy in the European discourse of citizenship. After an historical survey of recent literature on the issue, with special regard to the contribution made by Foucault the point is made that between the two poles of the autonomous individual as subject-of-rights and the absolute heteronomy of the «population» as the target of governmentality we have the space for the development of a set of social and political practices, through which the «others» of citizenship claim and affirm their own autonomy.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
