Citizen and Subject. A Postcolonial Constitution for the European Union?

The essay is devoted to the meaning of the colonial legacy for the present condition of Europe. The ambivalence of the colonial legacy is stressed with a reference to postcolonial criticism. Starting from some conceptual remarks on the history of the discourse of citizenship in modern Europe and its relationship with the «colonial project», the essay tries to highlight some characteristics of the present constitutional situation in Europe stressing the relevance of the peculiar position of migrants in order to evaluate the whole development of the new European citizenship in the making.
