The essay aims at outlining a possible geography of European cultural heritage based on three concepts: place, network, and milieu. The interrelation of them delineates a framework useful to take into account the complexity of cultural heritage, allowing to combine in a coherent view the relationship between urbanism and environment, the need to deal with different versions of the past of a territory, the challenges put by globalization with regard to local identities, the relationship between knowledge, skills and practices, and the impact of technological change.
