The paper offers a novel interpretation of the notion of a primitive language game, as it occurs both in the opening sections of Wittgenstein's Philosophicall Investigations and in his later writings. A connection is made between concepts mastery and language games. Wittgenstsin's work is placed and discussed in the context of recent discussion in the philosophy of language and compared to W.V. Quine's and R. Brandom accounts of meaning and linguistic practice.
