This collection of essaysfocuses on the growth of theinfrastructure of historiography: the archives, thejournals, the biographicaldictionaries and the historicalmuseums. It presents the placeswhere historians met one another sometimes in strictly organised capacity, sometimes in looser associations. Finally, it presents the diversity of the writers of history of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries: the university professorsworking in the haut lieux of the new historiography, but also the clergy, the nobility, historians working in institutions connected to political parties, women working outside the academe, and exhiled historians.
