The essay discusses the work of Canadian ‘media guru’ Marshall McLuhan moving from his humanistic background and education. The essay investigates his media theories in relation to his knowledge of Pre-Socratic and Patristic tradition, as well as his knowledge of the arts of trivium as expressed in his PhD dissertation on “The Place of Thomas Nashe in the Learning of His Time”. The goal is to prove that McLuhan’s developed his famous Laws of Media moving from a precise literary tradition, and that literature offered him a series of powerful heuristic tool to approach the new media induced environment.
