Data provided from multispectral satellite sensors Aster are nowday widely used in environmental monitoring studies, enabling the extraction of several information through the available bands. In particular, the agricultural land use is one of the most relevant application requested from the final users (i.e. Agencies involved in agricultural markets) and the availability of a reliable methodology has to be adopted urgently. The goal of this work is therefore double: on one hand, it investigates all the steps expected by the normal procedure of satellite image classification, pointing out the problems that could rise at different levels, such as finding and collecting data, studying of factors that affect the spectral behaviour of objects, the valuation of final results. On the other hand, the setting-up of a simple and reliable methodology for the classification of crops, which could be useful for public and private institutions involved in the political management of farms
