Identification of QTLs for brown spot resistance in pear De Franceschi P1., Ciriani A1., Collina M1., Brunelli A1., Dondini L1. 1 Dept of Agricultural Sciences, University of Bologna Brown spot is one of the most serious fungal diseases of pear in the Po valley. Stemphylium vesicarium is the causal agent of this disease and several antifungal treatments, repeated throughout the period between flowering and harvesting, are required for its control. Several of the most grown pear variety (such as Abbè Fétel) are highly susceptible; nevertheless, some sources of resistance (such as William and its mutated sports) are known. With the aim to develop molecular markers linked to this trait, seedlings derived from the cross Abbé Fétel x Max Red Bartlett have been evaluated for resistance to S. vesicarium for two consecutive years and, thanks to the availability of the linkage maps of the parental lines, a QTL analysis was performed. A significant QTL for resistance on linkage group 2 of the Max Red Bartlett and another QTL for susceptibility in linkage group 15 of Abbé Fétel have been identified. Markers located in the QTL regions represent a first step towards the set up of a MAS approach aimed to select new genotypes resistant to brown spot.
