Yaghnobis inhabit a peculiar geographic area in Tajikistan, along the Yaghnob valley (2200-2800 metres above sea-level), which features a unique heritage, with defined linguistic, cultural, environmental and historical characters. The Yaghnobi people constitute a linguistic minority and they live in relative, geographical isolation. Preliminary results of mitochondrial DNA (HVR1) showed a reduced genetic variability, with low number of haplotypes and low haplotype diversity. Pairwise Fst comparisons indicate that Yaghnobis are more similar to Kurds and to Iranians. We obtained a Multidimensional Scaling (MDS) plot based on the pairwise Fst values, where Yaghnobis occupy a peripheral position, distant from all other populations, demonstrating that they are not close to the other groups examined.
