Introductions, giving an example, and occasionally many other uses of a name can do. Names are tools to investigate the nature of things and by themselves names do not carry any, though a practice in using them carries with it information. If a proper name is attributed to an object, the name ideally distinguishes it from anything else; if a predicative name is applied to an object, it potentially groups it together with other objects and distinguishes the group from other groups. It is uses of a name for the same object or kind of object that develop and transmit concepts and conceptions of the object and the kind.
