Based on the research and initiatives carried out within the “Community-Based System for HIV treatment” (CoBaSys) project, this article aims, first, at reviewing the international debate on community-based systems for the fight against HIV/AIDS and the national policies of the five of the six CoBaSys countries (Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania and Zimbabwe) and, secondly, at discussing the proposals aimed at the establishment of a community-based system for the fight against HIV/AIDS based on the results of the activities carried out under the CoBaSys project. In particular, the latter part relies on the presentations and the discussions held during the CoBaSys national roundtables that have been organized in the above countries with the participation of key stakeholders involved - at different levels - in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
