The paper explores the use of Bharata Natyam, a South Indian dance style, in the context of the ongoing conflict in Sri Lanka. In particular it analyses how the Tamils of the Diaspora who support the LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) have created new gestures who allow them to narrate the civil war through dance. Diaspora Tamil children and adults perform Bharata Natyam choreographies on the occasion of the commemorative days dedicated to the LTTE dead fighters. The paper illustrates the transformations introduced in Bharata Natyam pieces with special reference to ceremonies of the Sri Lankan Tamil Diaspora in Italy.
