In many respects, early medieval England has become less ‘insular’ than it used to be. Various publications have taken into account the contacts with Carolingian Europe, while some other works have analysed much longer-distance relations, including Anglo-Saxon perceptions of the Arabic world. Thus, it is all the more surprising that no extensive monograph has been published on Anglo-Saxon contacts with Italy, and in particular with the papacy. This was the time when Latin Europe was formed and studying all dimensions of its internal construction is a particularly urgent and timely desideratum. The main aim of this research project is to try and fill in part of that gap, by providing a detailed and systematic study of all the evidence concerning the connections between Anglo-Saxon England and Italy, with special reference to Rome. Abstract
[N.B. L'anno indicato si riferisce all'anno di inizio del progetto, di durata quadriennale.] In recent years several studies have contributed to a better understanding of the relations between Anglo-Saxon England and the rest of the early medieval world.
