This article examines the origin and development of the Prosopography of Anglo-Saxon England (PASE) Project, from its initial conception to its publication on line in May 2005. Special attention is devoted to the construction of the data-collection database, which is the fruit of intense teamwork, involving both computing experts and historians. The notion of ‘factoid’ is discussed, as well as the PASE definitions of ‘Office’, ‘Occupation’ and ‘Status’, three of the main categories used in the data collection to structure and classify prosopographical information. In the second part of the article some specific examples are introduced to show how the database and some of its search tools can be used.

Abstract
This article examines the origin and development of the Prosopography of Anglo-Saxon England (PASE) Project, from its initial conception to its publication on line in May 2005. Special attention is devoted to the construction of the data-collection database, which is the fruit of intense teamwork, involving both computing experts and historians. The notion of ‘factoid’ is discussed, as well as the PASE definitions of ‘Office’, ‘Occupation’ and ‘Status’, three of the main categories used in the data collection to structure and classify prosopographical information. In the second part of the article some specific examples are introduced to show how the database and some of its search tools can be used.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
