The chapter examines the payment of church dues in late Anglo-Saxon England, considering first church-scot (a tribute which is not attested in the rest of Europe) and subsequently tithe. For the first time such sources as law codes, homilies and documentary evidence are examined systematically in order to establish whether in Anglo-Saxon England church dues were explicitly expected in exchange for pastoral care provisions. The conclusion is that a link with the pastoral care system was much more explicit in the case of tithe than church-scot; the latter ended up being more directly connected with the landholding system than ecclesiastical organisation.

Abstract
The chapter examines the payment of church dues in late Anglo-Saxon England, considering first church-scot (a tribute which is not attested in the rest of Europe) and subsequently tithe. For the first time such sources as law codes, homilies and documentary evidence are examined systematically in order to establish whether in Anglo-Saxon England church dues were explicitly expected in exchange for pastoral care provisions. The conclusion is that a link with the pastoral care system was much more explicit in the case of tithe than church-scot; the latter ended up being more directly connected with the landholding system than ecclesiastical organisation.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
