The study, which was undertaken as part of the preparations for the 80th anniversary of the birth of the Istituto e Museo di Storia della Scienza, stems from research on manuscript and iconographic material from various sources, but principally the museum’s archives. It surveys the creation of the Institute and Museum of History of Science in Florence and shows that its origins were due to the combination of a series of contingent circumstances driven by the strong-willed strategy of one man: Andrea Corsini (1875–1961). On the basis of new documentary evidence, I also draw a new portrait of Corsini and underline his relevance in the birth of Italian scientific heritage preservation.

Abstract: | The study, which was undertaken as part of the preparations for the 80th anniversary of the birth of the Istituto e Museo di Storia della Scienza, stems from research on manuscript and iconographic material from various sources, but principally the museum’s archives. | |
