The purpose of this advanced reference book is to provide an exhaustive overview of the work done in recent years in very different fields related to the software support to mobile computing. The goal is to present some relevant results obtained and lessons learned from the experience into one single compendium, by adopting the original and comprehensive perspective of developing and deploying mobile middleware. The book starts presenting mobile middleware motivations, requirements, and technologies; then, it proposes a taxonomy of solutions in the literature organized on the basis of their increasing goals (mobility/disconnection handling, location-based support, and context-based support). In addition, the book pay particular attention to the variety of application domains where mobile middleware is demonstrating its feasibility and effectiveness, also to show by examples the pros, cons, and trade-offs of the emerging mobile middleware solutions. Some of the leading features that have inspired our work are: - clarifying and organizing complete reference information and timely material for a hot topic that we believe is going to enhance its relevance more and more; - putting together the authoritative opinions of many recognized experts of the field to produce a very significant collection of important while different perspectives; - producing a compendium useful both for experts of the field as a reference/comparison stimulus and for people that need to build their own comprehension via an orienteering guide, easy to follow but also going into deep technical details; - helping us as a primary tool to systematize our knowledge of the field of mobile middlewares we research in, to better organize our work, and to spread knowledge around in our research community (and believe that is not the least important goal for us).
