The main objective of the project is to point out to the general public a social and architectural heritage, that is today neglected even if widespread in all the European countries. This project sets itself the aims of 1) studying the social and architectural history of the holiday camps in Europe; 2) identifying the most representative examples and the sites where positive outcomes in the management of holiday camps have been achieved; 3) promoting exchanges and co-operation at many levels, such as among municipalities or among organizations managing the holiday camps; 4) constructing a multi-disciplinary network of expertise, including research centres specialised in the architectural and social programs dedicated to childhood, or in the architecture of the tourist resorts; 5) developing and disseminating knowledge about these heritage. The project approach is based on an expanded concept of “holiday camps”, embracing the buildings that diffused during more than a century at the seaside, at the countryside and at the mountains, with the purpose of providing for the health and the education of the children outside their families and schools. The holiday camps are at the same time 1) a part of the social and historical heritage of their countries; 2) the testimony of a century of reflections upon the childhood (health and moral protection), but also of a special kind of tourism; 3) a potential resource for contemporary tourism. This project, that is based upon the comparative analysis of several selected examples, will be developed by the following schedule of activities: - Preliminary Meeting, Italy, 11/2006; - Intranet Web Site, 11/2006; - Comparative Socio-Anthropological and Architectural Study, from 12/2006; - Workshop “The landscape of holiday camps and the contemporary design and planning of their environment”, Belgium, 6/2007; - Summer School of Pedagogy “The holiday camps: yesterday, today, tomorrow”, France, 8/2007; - Travelling Exhibition “The Europe of Holiday Camps”, 9-10/2007; - Conference “The holiday camps among history, conservation and restoration”, Italy, 9/2007; - Book, 10/2007; - Web Site,“The Europe of Holiday Camps”, 10/2007. The co-organisers in this project are D.A.P.T. (project leader) and Provincia di Rimini representing Italy, the Direction de la Jeunesse at the French Ministry of Youth, the University of Ghent and the Faculty of Architecture of Timisoara. The partners include various local authorities, universities and national institutions, who can all participate in the development of the project activities. The co-organisers will co-operate in the implementation of the project 1) by contributing to the definition of methods and contents from the earlier stages of the project; 2) by producing at the same time comparative activities; 3) by participating to the same public activities. Each national work group is a cross-disciplinary team, so that it will be possible to combine the approaches of different “specialists”, those professionally concerned with the protection of the heritage, those working in local planning bodies, the researchers, professionally concerned with architecture and pedagogy, involved in an original dialogue between these two different disciplines. The knowledge descending from this different approaches will allow to develop a practical guidance for use by other organisations faced with the problem of managing or regenerating holiday camps and renewing tourist resorts.
