In this essay we address some methodological issues related to the assessment of social projects using web-based techniques. The starting point are a few basic questions. Is it possible to recognize the egemony of some cultural tendencies in the web environment? We know there is a huge (and increasing) amount of information online, but is there really “everything”? Do we know the identity, the reliability, the credibility and the contextualization of emitters, answer providers, sources? What do we know about web filters and links? In particular, we propose some considerations about not only advantages but also risks and limits connected to the use of the web for satisfaction surveys, group techniques, on-line interviews. Finally, we propose a further question: is on-line empathy possible?
