The chapter offers the first systematic analysis of the relationships between the rise of sociology and colonial politics in Italy from the unification to the fall of Fascism and the establishment of the first official chair in Sociology in 1950. It offers also a revised interpretation of the place of Sociology in the Fascist regime, focusing on the sociological work and academic entrepreneurship of the statistician Corrado Gini, emphasizing his cultural role in the formation of an Italian (i.e. Fascist) empire in the 30s.
