What is the economics of entrepreneurship about? this book aims at giving a comprehensive answer to this question, claiming that this recently established discipline should focus on the development of a framework of analysis able to integrate the understanding of the determinants and the effects of both entrepreneurship and innovation without forgetting to pay the due attention to the functioning of the inducement mechanisms (institutional frameworks and public policies). For this purpose, the book combines theoretical prescriptions and international empirical evidence. Contributions by some of the best known scholars in the field of the economics of entrepreneurship and innovation enable to investigate whether the interrelationships between the forces that affect firm and industry dynamics and ultimately determine economic growth are subject to change across countries and over time. The analysis of different national cases (including, Germany, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Turkey, the Netherlands, and the United States) puts forward that the relationship between entrepreneurship and growth (via innovation) is shaped by the context of country-specific institutions and industries, thereby providing hints for industrial and innovation policy. For the above reasons, this book is recommendable reading for all those scholars and students who want to become more familiar with recent theoretical advances and empirical results in the economics of entrepreneurship, innovation, and economic growth.
