Abstract
The discourse of the nation attempts to fix meanings and solidify cultural tropes in order to construct consensus. The discourse of sport is co-opted to the task of building nations. In the case of Britain, lexis regarding cricket has entered the mainstream of the discourse of politics and the government of the public sphere through "fairness" - "Its just not cricket." Joyce's excursus, in "Finnegan's Wake", into the discourse of cricket, characteristically playful and deconstructive, undermines our notions of the link between nation and language, challenging the very notion of that a language has an owner and indicting attempts by nations and national ideologies to move towards closure.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
