In contemporary theory of reference a main dispute concerns the cognitive aspects related to words, especially proper names and nouns for species and natural kinds. Most classical theories associates a conceptual content with the meaning of those terms; contemporary views deny that. I outline the idea that the link between names and things is perceptual and attentive rather than conceptual, giving one such reading of the Donnellan phenomena, a crucial case in the dispute.

Abstract

In contemporary theory of reference a main dispute concerns the cognitive aspects related to words, especially proper names and nouns for species and natural kinds. Most classical theories associates a conceptual content with the meaning of those terms; contemporary views deny that. I outline the idea that the link between names and things is perceptual and attentive rather than conceptual, giving one such reading of the Donnellan phenomena, a crucial case in the dispute.
