Assessing and managing environmental risks resulting from industrial and civil activities are themes of great and continually increasing complexity. In performing environmental risk assessments great effort is generally devoted to calculate risk on human health due to exposure to carcinogenic or toxic substances which may be present in the air, soil, water and foods. The aim of the paper is to present a procedure for an integrated approach to human health risk assessment through the description of an improved GIS application developed to manage all the steps of the procedure in a georeferenced framework. The case study of the Pace Valley in Sicily illustrates the way this tool can be applied particularly in order to evaluate the impact of contamination due to activities related to urban waste management.
