Drawing on a corpus of 79 news items broadcast by BBC's 9 o'clock news in the period April-June 1999 (Kosovo conflict), the paper aims to characterize the live exchange between newsreaders and reporters on location as a particular type of institutional talk within the larger discourse frame of the television news program. Methodologically, it may be taken as an exercise in the application of analytical/statistical tools to a small specialized corpus in order to shed light on the workings of a particular variety of institutional discourse.
