The Introduction offers a general overview of the theoretical and constitutional challenges that the current re-politicization of religion poses to the traditional understanding of secularism as a structural element of modern constitutionalism. Since the 1970’s, in profoundly different areas of the world, religions have undergone a process of de-privatization and increasingly seek a role not only in the public sphere, but, specifically, in the political arena. Is this predicament reconcilable with the Enlightenment ideals, ie separation of Faith from Reason and equal liberty for all? Are current constitutional models for managing the relationship between state and religion capable of ensuring the implementation of such ideals?

Abstract
The Introduction offers a general overview of the theoretical and constitutional challenges that the current re-politicization of religion poses to the traditional understanding of secularism as a structural element of modern constitutionalism. Since the 1970’s, in profoundly different areas of the world, religions have undergone a process of de-privatization and increasingly seek a role not only in the public sphere, but, specifically, in the political arena. Is this predicament reconcilable with the Enlightenment ideals, ie separation of Faith from Reason and equal liberty for all? Are current constitutional models for managing the relationship between state and religion capable of ensuring the implementation of such ideals?I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
