Italy, with France, is the most important producer (now joined by Spain) and exporter of wine in the world. Compared to France, the Italian wine sector is distinguished by the place occupied by table wines in the production as well as in the export. For years, with other wine producer countries of the European Union, Italy participated in the transformation of community support and political debate on geographical indications. The country sought new strategies to meet the challenges of competition with the countries of the "New World" of wine producers.
