The recent years have been characterized by the persistent trend for higher wireless multimedia data rates. This trend will have a significant impact on the underlying network and service technologies and consequently drive the research and the technology requirements for the deployment of the future Internet. In this paper1 , we argue that cognitive radio network can become an important enabler for the development of wireless future infrastructures. The purpose of the paper is to present a survey of the research work on cognitive radio networks and their application to the evolution of future Internet. Furthermore, the cooperative communications techniques for the physical layer in a cognitive wireless relay network will be surveyed and we will outline as well the research challenges still to be solved.

Abstract
The recent years have been characterized by the persistent trend for higher wireless multimedia data rates. This trend will have a significant impact on the underlying network and service technologies and consequently drive the research and the technology requirements for the deployment of the future Internet. In this paper1 , we argue that cognitive radio network can become an important enabler for the development of wireless future infrastructures. The purpose of the paper is to present a survey of the research work on cognitive radio networks and their application to the evolution of future Internet. Furthermore, the cooperative communications techniques for the physical layer in a cognitive wireless relay network will be surveyed and we will outline as well the research challenges still to be solved.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
