The essay intends to analyse the intersemiotic rewritings of one of the best known romances of Middle High German literature: «Laurin». Laurin, king of the dwarves who lived in an underground reign in the Dolomites, was attacked by Dietrich of Bern and his warriors who destroyed his fabulous garden of roses. During the German Romanticism, attention was paid to stress the Alpine origin and location of the story in order to highlight an Austrian-German cultural identity into which also Laurin was included and transformed in a prince of Tyrol. In the Bismarck age the scenario changed completely: Laurin is figured as the enemy of the Germanic unity and culture, and therefore he must be struggled and defeated. The study is concluded by some reflections on the political use of Laurin in South-Tyrol during the 20th century and his final transposition as a touristic icon of the Alps.
