Abstract
The analysis of the burden caused by HIV/AIDS on individuals and communities in Southern Africa has favoured the development of a framework of intervention about treatment and care based on the direct participation of “communities” in the fight against the epidemic. Community-based health systems have emerged to provide essential services in HIV prevention, care and treatment. This has been done in order to address both the needs of people affected by the disease and the limits of care and treatment provision by public health services, particularly in rural and remote areas. Community and home-based care is seen as a way to develop responses based on the needs of local communities. The volume collects articles based on a broad and multidisciplinary understanding of the multifaceted contexts in which the AIDS epidemic is taking place in Southern Africa. The contributors are scholars focusing on the broader international and regional debate on HIV/AIDS as well as the researchers that have participated in the ACP-funded project “Community Based ystems in HIV treatment (CoBaSys)”.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
