The main objective of this chapter is to provide a comparative description of the EU's democratic anchoring on European post-Soviet countries (Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Russia, and Ukraine) in order to evaluate the Union's potential and main limits in promoting democratization in this area. Democratic anchoring is operationalized using the following dimensions: a) pro-democracy activity (mainly democratic conditionality and democracy assistance) and b) institutional and economic linkages which refer respectively to the current status and final objectives of bilateral relations, and economic assistance and trade with the member states.
