The 1970s witnessed a gradual rapprochement between the shores of the Mediterranean and Europe, a process which involved the fields of both economics and politics. This essay focuses on the negotiations and signing of Cooperation Agreements between the European Economic Community and Egypt, Syria and Jordan in 1977. Although it was quite innovative, the new partnership did not, however, challenge the basic asymmetry in power and plenty that divided Europe and the Arab Mediterranean, with neighbours remaining distant.
