Gaining Independence in 1991 after having been included in Socialist Yugoslavia for more than four decades, the Republic of Macedonia has struggled to consolidate its democratic system and independence, and to gain admission into the EU and NATO, against dogged opposition from Greece. One of the central challenges faced Macedonia, along with other Yugoslav successor-states, is to develop civic values and to combat such uncivic values as ethnic intolerance, religious bigotry, and homophobia. The chapter included into this book is analyzing how these values evolved in the last two decades, to what extent they are compatible with the EU values included in the treaties and how they are perceived in the mixed population of Macedonia thanks to author’s fieldworks, a comparative analysis of original documents and surveys offering an exclusive in-depth insight into experiences and values of Macedonians.

Abstract
Gaining Independence in 1991 after having been included in Socialist Yugoslavia for more than four decades, the Republic of Macedonia has struggled to consolidate its democratic system and independence, and to gain admission into the EU and NATO, against dogged opposition from Greece. One of the central challenges faced Macedonia, along with other Yugoslav successor-states, is to develop civic values and to combat such uncivic values as ethnic intolerance, religious bigotry, and homophobia. The chapter included into this book is analyzing how these values evolved in the last two decades, to what extent they are compatible with the EU values included in the treaties and how they are perceived in the mixed population of Macedonia thanks to author’s fieldworks, a comparative analysis of original documents and surveys offering an exclusive in-depth insight into experiences and values of Macedonians.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
