Wit this chapter we want to be able to characterise the welfare settlement as it exists in the early 21st century. Our focus on multidimensionality allows us to identify patterns of change in several different sub-fields of the welfare state. Empirically, this text provides clear evidence of the direction taken by social policy over the last decade or so. What is more complicated, however, is to provide an interpretation that makes sense of it all.
