LACTATING ADENOMA Definition: During pregnancy and lactation, the epithelial cells of a tubular type adenoma may show extensive secretory changes warranting the designation of lactating adenoma. It has been suggested that such lesions represent focal accumulation of hyperplastic lobules. Clinical presentation: Patients with lactating adenomas are nursing mothers who have noted an area of increased firmness, either during lactation or, earlier, during pregnancy. Lactating adenomas vary in size, on occasion reaching large dimensions. Ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging are helpful for the preoperative diagnosis. Nevertheless large needle core biopsy should be used to exclude breast cancer. On histology lactating adenoma differ from tubular adenoma for the presence of lactational changes. Areas of infarction and haemorrhage can be present .
