In this chapter, the accessibility measure will be considered as a first exploratory step in the understanding of people’s needs and behaviour, especially in the framework of network connectivity structures. After an introductory background on transport economic networks and people's needs (Section 1), the important role of the accessibility measurement will be outlined in Section 2. Section 3 will then illustrate some accessibility results from the case-study concerning commuting in Germany, while Section 4 will conclude the present study with some reflections and suggestions for a future research agenda.

Abstract

In this chapter, the accessibility measure will be considered as a first exploratory step in the understanding of people’s needs and behaviour, especially in the framework of network connectivity structures. After an introductory background on transport economic networks and people's needs (Section 1), the important role of the accessibility measurement will be outlined in Section 2. Section 3 will then illustrate some accessibility results from the case-study concerning commuting in Germany, while Section 4 will conclude the present study with some reflections and suggestions for a future research agenda.
