The essay aims to investigate some issues of the Portuguese identity in relation to Europe. Perpetually poised between Atlantic and Europe, the Portuguese history can be reinterpreted through a dialectic of spacing out and rapprochement to Europe. In this sense, the deconstruction of the main imperial narratives, due to the use of the portuguese literature as the national archive, can become a fundamental tool for a critical approach to Portugal history.
