The paper re-examines the generally accepted representation of Ibn Taymiyya as the charismatic leader and most represntative scholar of the xiv century Hanabali community of Damscus. A close reading of the extensive biographical literature on Ibn Taymiyya strongly calls for a reconsideration of Ibn Taymiyya’s authority among his own “community” of scholars.
