The essay discusses Marshall McLuhan's "The Gutenberg Galaxy" in the light of his humanitic roots and literary scholarly background. In particular, it emphasises the role played by Modernist literary experiment in shaping McLuhan's probing and writing techniques. Literature is, in fact, approached as functinal to the construction of the Canadian media theorist's investigative strategy and storytelling. McLuhan's mosaic is also approached as both a hypertext and a hyperlanguage developed by a humanist acting inside the electric age, pursuing an eclectic approach to knowledge and actuality, collecting materials from various fields and cultural languages. The essay proves that McLuhan's holistic and inclusive approach to mobile situations aimed to reveal new social patterns, that is, to point to the various larger figures in the carpet.
