The chapter deals with the general economic, social and political scenario which characterised the year 2011 in Italy. From the "divorce" between Fini and Berlusconi to the international crisis management, from the austerity policies introduced by Minister Tremonti until the students' mobilisation against the governments' cuts and in particular a new university reform. A special focus is offered on the contents of the financial bills against the effects of the crisis and on their impact on welfare provisions and social conditions of citizens.
