The essay presents the main social and historical accounts of the role of women's magazines in shaping and affecting the imagery and lifestyles of lecturers from different social classes, races, ages, and cultural milieus. For at least three centuries, these periodicals have instructed women to choose and consume commodities in order to make “appropriate” female identity-marking purchases. The major sets of researches on their role in defining women’s tasks and interests in contemporary society are then summarized.
