This article summarizes the main historical changes in the history of consumer cultures since the 18th century. The following topics are discussed: the decline of the sumptuary laws and the beginning of a modern consumption dynamic; imperial commercial networks and the first globalisation of consumption; social classes and consumer cultures between 19th and 20th century; changes of the commercial distribution in the 20th century; fascism, communism and the crisis of the individual consumption in the inter-war period; the golden age of mass consumption in the 1950s and 1960s; consumption identities in the age of the postmodernist and postfordist society.
