This special issue introduces visual studies as an emerging interdisciplinary field for analysing contemporary culture through the relationships between images, practices of looking, and social processes. Its contributions examine the production, circulation and appropriation of images, interrogating the connections between representation, visibility and power. Photography, cinema, media and everyday visual practices become privileged sites for understanding the social construction of the gaze, identities and imaginaries. Bringing sociology into dialogue with cultural studies, anthropology and critical theory, the issue explores how visual forms participate in the organisation of contemporary social life.
