The paper reflects on the themes of inclusion, dialogue, and transformative practices, centering its analysis on mentoring—an area in which the Ministry of Education and Merit (MIM) has required schools to invest at least one-third of their PNRR (National Recovery and Resilience Plan) funds aimed at combating early school leaving over the past two academic years. School principals have been required to sign stringent performance contracts and commit to spending a total of at least 400 million euros on mentoring initiatives. This study examines this context, clarifying the institutional and pedagogical mandate assigned to schools regarding individual interventions for at-risk students. The first part analyzes the framework of possibilities and constraints established by regulatory acts, linking this to a systematic review of the mentoring tool (Gelli & Mannarini, 1999; Silke, Brady, & Dolan, 2019). The second part highlights the lack of a specific training framework for teaching staff regarding this highly specialized type of intervention, effectively leaving the matter to self-directed learning and implicit beliefs. The third and final part explores the potential link between mentoring and empowerment as a training paradigm (Tolomelli, 2015), investigating the relationship between desire, desiring energy, and the ambiguity of desire (Ilardo, 2020; Biesta, 2023) within a support and emancipation process of this kind. While the article adopts a theoretical approach and is limited by focusing on ongoing initiatives of uncertain duration, it aims to lay the groundwork for further reflection and future studies, including qualitative assessments of the impact on schools. The final recommendations may serve as a basis for future interventions of this nature in the schools of the coming years, given the proliferation of roles such as tutors, guidance counselors, and mentors outlined in current regulations.
