Manuel Correia de Oliveira Andrade (1922-2007)

In the last few years, a burgeoning international literature has started to rediscover figures of critical geographers from Latin America who played internationally influential roles in the construction of critical geographies, having been exiled and inserted in transnational and multilingual networks since the 1960s and 1970s (Davies 2019 and 2023; Ferretti 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2022b). As for Brazil, the two most famous names are undoubtedly Josué de Castro (1908-1973) (see GBS n. 40) and Milton Santos (1926-2001) (see GBS n. 37). Yet, the outstanding figure of Manuel Correia de Oliveira Andrade (1922-2007) urgently deserves further work, which in Brazil is now ongoing, as testified by events such as the international conference O Brasil de Manuel Correia de Andrade: interpretações, diálogos e acervos that took place in São Paulo from 26 to 29 September 2023. Significantly, this meeting was organised by the Institute of Brazilian Studies of the University of São Paulo (IEB/USP), where the huge Andrade’s personal archives were transferred following his will and where a project is ongoing for inventorying and making known these materials to academic and non-academic publics
