The article highlights the contribution of the European Recovery Program (ERP) to the modernisation of major Italian industries thanks to the dispatch by the United States of technologically advanced machinery and equipment. Though the Marshall Plan did not change the paths of development of the various regions of Italy, it offered an opportunity of industrial renewal for those regions with a solid and long-established industrial fabric, while it was thanks to the Lire fund that the infrastructural requirements of the areas hardest hit by wartime destruction were met.
