This essay critically re-examines some of Elio Franzini's insights into the problem of taste in eighteenth-century British aesthetics by placing them in dialogue with David Hume's aesthetic theory. Taking as its starting point the view that taste represents an unstable balance between subjectivity, experience, and normativity, it challenges the traditional interpretation that construes eighteenth-century aesthetics as merely an "aesthetics of sentiment."
