A accomplished and vivacious ballerina who enjoyed a successful career throughout the second half of the nineteenth century, Carolina Pochini (1835–1901) fully embodied an ‘Italian’ style of dance, which differed both from that in vogue in France and from the style that would become established in Russia at the end of the century. Furthermore, she was a woman of the theatre who was free to make her own artistic and life choices. The entry dedicated to her in the prestigious ‘Biographical and Thematic Dictionary of Women in Italy’, published by Treccani (Volume Uno, 1700–1918, edited by Emma Giammattei, Istituto della Enciclopedia Italiana Fondata da Giovanni Treccani S.p.A., Rome 2026). The essay is therefore part of a broad and complex editorial project, the aims of which are clearly outlined by the editor in the volume’s introduction: “to consider and highlight the lives of women throughout history, in specific times and places, shaped by varying degrees of self-awareness, whether in harmony with or in rebellion against the values of the era, within social, economic and political relationships, but also in relation to the dreams, illusions and passions that belong to another dimension – the no less real realm of the imagination. Life-itself, and the lives of women in context, in action.”

Abstract
Life-itself, and the lives of women in context, in action.”I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
