This entry investigates the notion of trauma in memory studies and the ways in which it evolved within museum spaces. Originally formulated as a psychoanalytic category centered on individual psychic extreme experiences, trauma has progressively become a key paradigm for understanding the cultural and political reprocessing of collective pasts. From Freud’s early formulations to the theoretical turning points marked by Cathy Caruth and Jeffrey C. Alexander, trauma has shifted from a clinical concept to a central framework for analyzing how communities negotiate and institutionalize memories of violence. The museum emerges as a possible place for the semiotic reworking of traumatic histories. Many contemporary museums can be described as “traumatic” not simply because they represent violent pasts, but because museums function as spaces where trauma is narrativized and hence central arenas for the cultural reprocessing of collective trauma.

Abstract
Many contemporary museums can be described as “traumatic” not simply because they represent violent pasts, but because museums function as spaces where trauma is narrativized and hence central arenas for the cultural reprocessing of collective trauma.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
