Semantic universals set the boundaries to cross‐linguistic semantic variation and also constrain change. They have been formulated with respect to the organization of the content lexicon and of the functional lexicon, as well as with respect to compositional principles and pragmatic principles. Their role in diachronic linguistics is illustrated by means of examples and the analysis of a case study. Furthermore, directionality and cyclicity in grammaticalization are discussed as sources of potential diachronic universals.

Abstract
Semantic universals set the boundaries to cross‐linguistic semantic variation and also constrain change. They have been formulated with respect to the organization of the content lexicon and of the functional lexicon, as well as with respect to compositional principles and pragmatic principles. Their role in diachronic linguistics is illustrated by means of examples and the analysis of a case study. Furthermore, directionality and cyclicity in grammaticalization are discussed as sources of potential diachronic universals.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
